Construction Materials Testing Laboratory Manager

Position Overview

The CMT Laboratory Manager directs and supervises the activities of the personnel assigned to the construction materials and geotechnical laboratories where asphalt and bituminous mixtures, aggregate, soils, and concrete are tested in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO and other recognized test methodologies.  The Laboratory Manager is principally responsible for oversight of technical matters, scheduling and completion of work, approval of laboratory reports, budgets and sales, customer satisfaction and other quality related issues.  The CMT Laboratory Manager receives direction and supervision from the Assistant Director, CMT and Geotechnical Laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Management and review of technical and administrative personnel.
  • Technical authority on testing and inspection methods.
  • Oversee work scheduling and completion.
  • Review and approval of laboratory reports.
  • Handling of customer relations.
  • Review and approval of procurements including test equipment and laboratory supplies.
  • See that test equipment is properly calibrated within its assigned calibration interval.
  • Be familiar with the company’s QA-020 quality management system (QMS) requirements and documentation and implement the QMS policies and procedures.
  • Commit to compliance with QA-020 (ISO/IEC 17025) and efforts to improve the effectiveness of the QMS
  • Coordinate with quality assurance department on implementation and maintenance of quality related activities such as training, equipment maintenance, audits, and accreditation programs.
  • Preparation, review, and revision of departmental budget.
  • Departmental profitability including marketing and sales efforts.
  • Other duties as directed by the Assistant Director, CMT and Geotechnical Laboratories.

Education and Experience:

  • Technical or Bachelor's degree in science or engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of engineering or scientific experience in the various fields of construction materials.
  • Relevant experience in supervising and directing technical and administrative personnel.
  • Knowledge of technical matters including testing methods and test equipment, basic accounting and computer skills, and technical writing skills.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to
    meeting deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Leadership skills

Physical Requirements:

Physical Ability

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, twist, reach overhead, bending, crawling, climbing; lift minimum of 80 pounds

Visual Ability

  • Visual accommodation necessary for reading instructions/materials necessary to perform functions of job

Hearing Ability

  • Ability to monitor sounds for changes in machine function

Work Conditions

  • Work exposes the employee to laboratory testing devices, dust, soil and other external environment factors.
