Material Test Technician (Entry Level)

Position Overview

On the job training will be provided for this entry-level position. Provide machining, metallurgical and mechanical/physical testing support to an independent testing laboratory that performs a wide variety of services in the determination of chemical compositions, material structures and product performance parameters. This position requires a person to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of diverse business needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out physical testing and inspection procedures on product samples.
  • Provide machining of test samples.
  • Provide metallurgical details on assigned product samples.
  • Carry out system, equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor/Manager.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of High School GED, some college preferred.
  • One to two years machine shop experience preferred, but willing to train the right candidate.
  • Experience with standard laboratory equipment is a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently on tasks.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to Supervisor, Mechanical Testing Section and Manager, Analytical Services Division

Physical Requirements:

Physical Ability

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, twist, reach overhead, bending, crawling, climbing; lift minimum of 40 pounds

Visual Ability

  • Visual accommodation necessary for reading instructions/materials necessary to perform functions of job

Hearing Ability

  • Must be able to make and receive phone calls.

Work Conditions

  • Combination of standard office, machining equipment shop and occasional travel to project sites.
