BMI's Jenkins tapped as 2023 Radon Hero

05.30.23 | Tracey Hanlin

Congratulations to our own Dr. Phillip H. Jenkins for being awarded the industry's most prestigious Radon Hero Award by the Conference of Radiation Control Directors, Inc. The Radon Hero Award is thanks and acknowledgement to an individual for his/her commitment to sustained radon risk reduction. Dr. Phil accepted the honor at the recent National Conference on Radiation Control in Houston. He has enjoyed a long and successful career since receiving his BS, Masters and PhD – all from Purdue University. After graduating, he was a Senior Health Physicist at the Tennessee Valley Authority in its nuclear power and uranium mining and milling operations. Then he signed on with the Mound Facility in Miamisburg, OH where he was involved with radon monitoring in the environments around a number of sites across the country undergoing remedial action by the Dept. of Energy. In 1991 Dr. Phil came to Bowser-Morner to build our radon reference lab, a facility that is now a premier quality assurance testing lab for radon measurement devices. The Radon Hero Award recognizes Dr. Phil for his “over 30 years of dedicated radon experience and his service on countless committees and work groups.” He has been involved in the Radon Industry Trade Association (AARST) for over 25 years, including as president. He has been instrumental in encouraging radon chambers and labs to intercompare for more consistent and accurate radon measurement across the country and around the world. Throughout his career, Dr. Phil has always been willing to assist and to educate people on radon. He now provides technical oversight for our Radon Reference Laboratory, but he's leaning into retirement. The responsibility of the lab falls to Manager Nate Real, but like many BMI employees, Dr. Phil retiring after 32 years of service to Bowser-Morner is more difficult than it sounds. Congratulations on your lifelong achievements and the Radon Hero Award, Dr. Phil!
